Days 23–24: Not Giving Up (Even When You’re Tempted to Stay in Bed)

Day 23: Fighting the Bed
Day 23 started with a battle against my own bed. The world outside was calling, but my foot—and honestly, my whole body—wanted nothing more than to stay horizontal and sulk. So I cranked up the Trolls song “Not Giving Up Today”, hit repeat… about five times, and willed myself to get moving. It worked. Somehow, music plus stubbornness plus a lot of muttered pep talks got me through.

Day 24: Fake It Till You Make It
Fast forward to Day 24, and I decided to take that momentum seriously. I threw myself into the “fake it till you make it” approach: fake tan, washed hair, the works. Mostly because I knew friends were coming over. Having a plan, even a small one, gave me a reason to push through the fatigue and frustration—and it paid off.

Chaos and Fun
When my gorgeous friends arrived, the house immediately filled with laughter, chatter, and a little chaos. Beautiful pastries and flowers helped, of course. Later, my daughter had a playdate, and the kitchen transformed into a whirlwind of baking, mess, and giggles. The kids zipped around on my new scooter, and even the wheelchair got drafted as a novelty ride. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t calm. It wasn’t even orderly. But it was fun. Messy, loud, chaotic fun. For the first time in what felt like ages, it genuinely felt like a good day.

Takeaways

  1. Music is magic. Sometimes five repeats of “Not Giving Up Today” is exactly what you need to move.
  2. Purpose beats inertia. Having something or someone to look forward to gives you the push your body sometimes refuses to give.
  3. Embrace the chaos. Messy, loud, unpredictable days can still be joyful and memorable.
  4. Celebrate the small wins. Getting out of bed, washing your hair, or making a fake tan count. They’re steps toward feeling human again.

Some days are messy. Some days are quiet. And some days—like these—are gloriously, beautifully chaotic. And that’s okay.
