Thirteen weeks. I can hardly believe it.

So here we are: Week 13 of my Achilles tendon rupture recovery — and I’m finally ready to talk about what this whole thing has really been like.
When I First Heard “Achilles Rupture”
When the doctor said I’d ruptured my Achilles tendon, I nodded like I understood. Spoiler: I didn’t.
In my head, it was something minor — a little strain, a few physio sessions, maybe a couple of weeks on crutches. I’d rest, eat a few boxes of Milk-Tray, and be back on my pilates reformer and daily jogs in no time.
Ha! Absolutely not.
It turns out the Achilles tendon isn’t a luxury part. It’s the powerhouse that lets you walk, run, climb stairs, and generally exist without noticing. When it snaps, your whole world slows right down.
What the Achilles Tendon Actually Does
Here’s the short version for normal humans:
- The Achilles tendon is the thick cord that connects your calf muscle to your heel bone.
- It’s your leg’s anchor rope — the thing that lets you push off the ground when you move.
- When it ruptures, that connection breaks completely.
- Walking, standing, or balancing suddenly becomes a full-time job.
It’s not dramatic to say that this tiny piece of tissue holds your mobility — and your sanity — together.
Weeks 1–6: The Hopping Olympics
If you ever want to test your patience, try living life on one leg.
During those early weeks, I became a professional hopper.
- Carrying a cup of tea? Impossible.
- Getting up the stairs? A tactical operation.
- Dropping something on the floor? Gone forever.
My Achilles rupture recovery at that stage was pure survival mode. My bathroom was an obstacle course, my crutches my worst best friends, and my dignity… well, that’s still MIA.
The Middle Phase: Moon-Boot Mayhem
When I swapped the cast for the moon boot, I thought, this is it — I’m healed!
Wrong again.
The moon boot gave me movement but not freedom. My leg felt like a stranger I was trying to get reacquainted with.
Physiotherapy began, and every simple-looking Achilles rehab exercise turned into an Olympic challenge. Standing on one leg? Trembling. Calf raises? Chaos.
That’s when it hit me: recovery isn’t a sprint (which is ironic, since sprinting is months away). It’s more like climbing Everest — barefoot — with questionable balance.
Week 13: Slow Recovery After Achilles Surgery
Fast-forward to now — 13 weeks post-Achilles tendon surgery.
I’m walking again (with a slight penguin vibe), wearing a pair of Air Max with 2 wedges stuck in them, and catching flashes of normal life returning. The heat, stiffness, tingling — all part of the grand comeback tour.
But I’ll be honest: this has been slower than I ever imagined.
I’ve had a few setbacks, including infections after Achilles surgery, which have stretched out my timeline. Healing has been a stop-and-start process.
And yet — I’ve made myself a promise:
I’m not going to rush this.
I’m doing it right this time. No shortcuts, no “I’ll be grand.” I’m giving my body the space and time it needs to truly rebuild.
When I go back to work and normal life, I want to go back strong, not struggling. I want to step into that next chapter confident, steady, and ready — both physically and mentally.
What I’ve Learned from Achilles Tendon Recovery
Thirteen weeks has taught me more than I ever wanted to know about tendons, patience, and resilience.
Here’s what stands out:
- Recovery isn’t linear. It’s messy, unpredictable, and full of detours.
- Independence is a gift. You only realise how much you rely on your body when it suddenly can’t do the basics.
- The Achilles tendon deserves respect. It’s a tiny part of your anatomy, but without it, you’re going nowhere — literally.
